Who are the Royal Stiltwalkers?

On these pages you can read about the origin of walking on stilts and why the women wear clogs.

Brief introduction

The 'Langevelde' area of the town flooded almost yearly because of the little 'Molenbeek' river. Cut off from the outside world, the people could only reach the towncentre while walking on stilts. During strong winters, they crossed on clogs or on large pieces of wood. The clogwalkers illustrate this use from the cold winters of yesteryear.
